MENTORFIRST PROGRAMME
What is MENTORFIRST?
The program offers a mentorship program for all doctoral students who receive a doctoral contract and are required to teach at one of the UPC BarcelonaTECH schools. Students hired for programs requiring teaching (FPI, FPU, and others) will have priority for enrollment, provided they are assigned to the UPC for at least one academic year.
You will receive:
- Mentorship from an experienced scholar in your Department.
- Assistance from your mentor during teaching practice hours (minimum 20 hours required for certification).
- Basic training in university teaching (1 ECTS = 25 hours). This “Module 1” is part of the Degree in Teaching and Learning (“Postgrau en Educació Universitària en STEAM”) from ICE-UPC, and fulfills the legal requirement for new lecturers under Spanish University law (LOSU).
- Guidance to complete a Teaching Academic Portfolio, which can be used for future academic applications.

Certification & Benefits
Certification:
- Full certification upon successful completion of all activities.
- Partial certification available for each module.
- Certificates meet future lecturer training requirements in Spain.

Key Information
- Programme Start: October 2025
- Eligibility: Doctorate students with FPI, FPU contracts or others that incorporate the obligation to teach teaching; Open places for other doctoral or postdoctoral students
- Minimum Teaching Hours: 20 under mentorship
- Language: Module 1 in English; mentoring sessions flexible
- Mentor: Choose your mentor (thesis director or academic tutor)
- Compensation: Mentors volunteer; trainers are compensated
- Note: Participation is not a preferential merit for permanent UPC positions
Timeline
- Mid-October: Programme registration
- November: Programme start
- November–April: Module 1 and Portfolio development
- May–June 2026: Programme closure (training completion, portfolio submission, mentor report)
